Statement from Broome County Legislature Chairman Daniel J. Reynolds

“While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, they’re not entitled to make up their own facts.

When Jason Garnar was a member of the Legislature Majority in 2008 and 2009, he teamed up with the Democrat County Executive and twice voted for County budgets that contained $5 Million in phantom gas lease revenues that never came to fruition. Those irresponsible Jason Garnar budgets led to putting the County in dire fiscal straits.

Since 2011, with Republicans in the Legislature Majority, the Legislature has passed practical budgets that have protected County taxpayers and held property tax increases to an average 1.18%. Ironically, despite Jason Garnar’s recent statements that those budgets were ‘rubber-stamped’ and ‘drove the County’s finances into the ground’, as a County Legislator Jason Garnar voted in favor of two out of three of them.

Even the recent State Comptroller’s Audit itself stated, ‘…our comparison of actual results of operations to budgeted amounts indicated the budgets were relatively accurate’.

While County Executive Garnar would prefer to lash out against our Daylight Legislation and distract the public from the fact that his administration has repeatedly withheld important fiscal information from the Legislature and public, the Legislature will continue to take proactive steps to protect County taxpayers and bring daylight to County finances and operations.”
